coupons and discounts

Coupons are generally easy to find.  You don't need to go searching for them; they are easily located in the daily newspaper.  The problem one faces, however, is where to find useful coupons.  For the most part, those coupons in the newspaper are for newer, expensive consumer brands.  On the internet, coupons for use through online merchants can come in the form of discount or promotional codes.

In order to find useful and high-savings coupons, you will need to search the internet for information.  Thankfully, there are several venues where good coupons are located.

Useful Strategies

  • Use coupons wisely – Make sure to check on your local newspaper and online for coupons for everyday things you buy.  This may seem like a no-brainer, but sometimes it can be hard to find useful coupons.  You should never use coupons on things you don’t normally buy; the savings on the new, expensive product likely won’t make up the cost difference between the comparable products you might usually buy.  Also, many circulars have coupons for Free items from time to time without warning.  Make sure you don’t miss out on those.
Also, many useful coupons can be found online.  There are several areas to look, including the Coupons section of Fatwallet (http://www.fatwallet.com/coupons/) and the Coupons section of Slickdeals (http://slickdeals.net/coupons.php).  Some of the coupons are online only, but many are printable.  Also, see The Free Stuff Times Coupons section for more printable coupons (http://www.freestufftimes.com/coupons/).

Slickdeals.net offer Frontpage Deals, a daily collection of some of the best prices and discounts on the internet.

  • Use coupon codes for every purchase – You may have noticed that many internet retailers have a section for a coupon or a promotional code when you check out.  Most of the time, one would just skip over this.  This is a mistake.  You always want to search and try to find a coupon code; many times there are very good deals available, such as free shipping or a dollar-off amount.  The absolute best site for this is RetailMeNot (http://www.retailmenot.com/); its strength lies in the fact that users post their own codes, so the site does not have to rely on codes that are only released to the public by the retailer.  Another strong choice is NaughtyCodes (http://www.naughtycodes.com/), which has hundreds of coupon codes for hundreds of retailers, all of which are easily alphabetized in a list.  You can also find fast food and restaurant coupons this way (http://www.retailmenot.com/printable/category/fastfood).

  • Look for Discounts Online All of the Time – Many websites aggregate amazing deals on many different types of items and services that can be easily reviews every day.  The best of these is Dealnews (http://dealnews.com/).  I have found 50-90% off retail prices deals on this site for items regularly needed.  I was able to obtain a $30 brand new network laser printer and $20 brand new Oakley goggles, among other things.
  • Free Movie Discounts – Do you hate paying $5 or more to rent a single movie?  Stop doing this; you can rent movies either online or in-store for free tonight.  A good starting point is signing up for free trials of NetFlix and Blockbuster Total Access.  You can easily get a free 2-week trial of Netflix at their website (http://www.netflix.com/).  You can also search Google for some 1-month trial codes or links; I don’t have any posted here because they change so fast.  Make sure to cancel your trial before the last day of the trial, and you can just sign up again using a different email address and credit card number.  Also, you can do this with Blockbuster Total Access.  There is a free 21-day trial at this link: https://www.blockbuster.com/signup/y/reg/p.27394/pc.pizzahut3weeks/c.pizzahut.  You can also sign up for this multiple times using either different credit card number or email addresses.

Would you rather get your movie in-store?  Any of the rentals you receive from Blockbuster Total Access can be exchanged in-store for a new DVD, free.  Also, I believe they still offer a print-out coupon for a free rental that can be printed from your membership page.  Many stores including Walmart, Walgreens, and McDonalds in some areas, have DVD-rental kiosks, the most popular being RedBox.  Luckily, you can get these rentals for free anytime; the user-updated website Inside Redbox (http://www.insideredbox.com/redbox-codes/) offers free rental codes.  Just make sure to return the DVD before 5pm the next day to avoid any charges.  Each code can be used once per credit / debit card.  So, for example, if you have 6 credit / debit cards and there are 6 valid codes currently available, that is 36 free 1-day rentals.

Insideredbox.com offers free DVD rental code for RedBox locations nationwide.  This list is updated daily.
